Wisconsin Hit-and-Run Crashes: What to Do and How a Plate Lookup Helps
Under Wisconsin law (Wis. Stat. § 346.67 et seq.), any driver involved in an accident causing injury, death, or property damage must immediately stop, provide their name, address, and vehicle registration, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene carries severe penalties:
- Hit-and-run involving property damage only: Class A misdemeanor — up to 9 months in jail and/or $10,000 fine
- Hit-and-run involving bodily injury: Class H felony — up to 6 years imprisonment and/or $10,000 fine
- Hit-and-run involving great bodily harm: Class F felony — up to 12.5 years imprisonment and/or $25,000 fine
- Hit-and-run involving death: Class D felony — up to 25 years imprisonment and/or $100,000 fine
- License revocation mandatory upon conviction for any hit-and-run in Wisconsin
If you were the victim of a hit-and-run in Wisconsin, here is your immediate action plan:
- Call 911 immediately. Wisconsin State Patrol handles crashes on state and federal highways; local police handle city streets; county sheriffs handle rural county roads.
- Note everything about the fleeing vehicle — full or partial plate number, color, make, model, damage, and direction of travel.
- Do not follow the fleeing vehicle.
- File an insurance claim — Wisconsin requires minimum liability insurance on all registered vehicles.
- Contact a licensed PI to run the plate for registered owner identification — this is a DPPA-permissible use for legal proceedings and insurance claims.

- Plate must be clearly visible, properly illuminated at night, and unobstructed at all times
- Hands-Free Law: Wisconsin prohibits texting while driving for all drivers. Handheld cell phone use while driving is banned for school bus drivers and novice drivers under 18. Wisconsin does not have a statewide hands-free ban for adult drivers as of 2025.
- New residents: Must register an out-of-state vehicle within 60 days of establishing Wisconsin residency
- Annual or biennial renewal: Wisconsin offers both annual and 2-year registration options. Renewal can be completed online at wisconsindot.gov or at any DMV service center.
- Personalized plates: Up to 7 characters. Must comply with WisDOT content guidelines.
- Vehicle safety inspection: Wisconsin does not require periodic vehicle safety inspections for most passenger vehicles statewide.
- No emissions testing: Wisconsin eliminated its vehicle emissions testing program in 2020 — one of the last holdouts among Midwestern states to drop the requirement.
- Insurance requirement: Minimum liability coverage — $25,000 bodily injury per person / $50,000 per accident / $10,000 property damage.
- Impaired driving: Wisconsin has historically had one of the highest rates of OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) arrests and alcohol-related fatalities in the nation. Wisconsin is one of the only states where a first OWI offense is not a criminal charge — it is a civil violation.
