North Carolina Hit-and-Run Crashes: What to Do and How a Plate Lookup Helps
Under North Carolina law (N.C.G.S. § 20-166), any driver involved in an accident causing injury, death, or property damage must immediately stop, provide their name, address, and vehicle registration, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene carries severe penalties:
- Hit-and-run involving property damage only: Class 1 misdemeanor — up to 120 days in jail
- Hit-and-run involving injury: Class H felony — up to 25 months imprisonment
- Hit-and-run involving serious injury: Class F felony — up to 41 months imprisonment
- Hit-and-run involving death: Class F felony — up to 41 months imprisonment (Class D if DWI involved — up to 204 months)
- License revocation mandatory upon conviction for any hit-and-run in North Carolina
If you were the victim of a hit-and-run in North Carolina, here is your immediate action plan:
- Call 911 immediately. NC State Highway Patrol handles crashes on state and federal highways; local police handle city streets; county sheriffs handle rural county roads.
- Note everything about the fleeing vehicle — full or partial plate number, color, make, model, damage, and direction of travel.
- Do not follow the fleeing vehicle.
- File an insurance claim — North Carolina requires minimum liability insurance on all registered vehicles.
- Contact a licensed PI to run the plate for registered owner identification — this is a DPPA-permissible use for legal proceedings and insurance claims.
