Tennessee Hit-and-Run Crashes: What to Do and How a Plate Lookup Helps
Under Tennessee law (T.C.A. § 55-10-101 et seq.), any driver involved in an accident causing injury, death, or property damage must immediately stop, provide their name, address, and vehicle registration, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene carries severe penalties:
- Hit-and-run involving property damage only: Class A misdemeanor — up to 11 months 29 days in jail and/or $2,500 fine
- Hit-and-run involving bodily injury: Class E felony — up to 2 years imprisonment and/or $3,000 fine
- Hit-and-run involving serious bodily injury: Class D felony — up to 4 years imprisonment and/or $5,000 fine
- Hit-and-run involving death: Class B felony — up to 12 years imprisonment and/or $25,000 fine
- License revocation mandatory upon conviction for any hit-and-run in Tennessee
If you were the victim of a hit-and-run in Tennessee, here is your immediate action plan:
- Call 911 immediately. Tennessee Highway Patrol handles crashes on state and federal highways; local police handle city streets; county sheriffs handle rural county roads.
- Note everything about the fleeing vehicle — full or partial plate number, color, make, model, damage, and direction of travel.
- Do not follow the fleeing vehicle.
- File an insurance claim — Tennessee requires minimum liability insurance on all registered vehicles.
- Contact a licensed PI to run the plate for registered owner identification — this is a DPPA-permissible use for legal proceedings and insurance claims.
