Kentucky Hit-and-Run Crashes: What to Do and How a Plate Lookup Helps
Kentucky recorded 11,000+ hit-and-run accidents in 2022 — including 955 injury-causing crashes and 28 fatalities. Under Kentucky law (KRS 189.580), any driver involved in an accident resulting in injury, death, or property damage must stop immediately, provide their information, and render reasonable assistance.
Penalties for leaving the scene in Kentucky:
- Property damage only: Class A misdemeanor — up to 12 months in jail and $500 fine
- Injury to another person: Class D felony — 1 to 5 years in prison
- Death of another person: Class C felony — 5 to 10 years in prison
If you were the victim of a hit-and-run in Kentucky, here is your immediate action plan:
- Call 911 immediately and stay at the scene. Kentucky State Police handle crashes on state highways; local police handle city streets.
- Note everything about the fleeing vehicle — full or partial plate number, color, make, model, damage, and direction of travel.
- Do not follow the fleeing vehicle.
- File an insurance claim — your insurer will require a police report number.
- Contact a licensed PI to run the plate for registered owner identification — this is a DPPA-permissible use for legal proceedings and insurance claims.
